Jerilyn A. “Jeri” Logemann

Jerilyn (Jeri) Logemann, ASHA 1994 and 2000 president and a world-renowned researcher in speech-language pathology, died at age 72 on June 19, 2014, in her home surrounded by friends.

After obtaining her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from Northwestern University, Logemann joined the faculty and became one of the most influential leaders in her field. A prolific scholar, she contributed groundbreaking books, journal articles, workshops, conference presentations and seminars on the management of voice disorders, normal swallowing physiology, and the assessment and treatment of speech and swallowing in patients with head and neck cancer and those with neurological impairments.

Logemann was the Ralph and Jean Sundin professor of communication sciences and disorders at Northwestern University, and professor of otolaryngology and neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where she directed the Voice, Speech and Language Service and Swallowing Center.

A pioneer in the development of techniques for effective assessment and treatment of speech and swallowing disorders, she—with Hilda Fisher—developed the Fisher-Logemann Test of Articulation Competence, and she developed the modified barium swallow test. Regarded as the leading authority in swallowing disorders, her research was continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies for more than 30 years. Always concerned with improving speech-language pathology clinical service, Logemann formed the Clinical Sciences and Disorders Clinical Trials Research Group in 1995 to assist in the design and conduct of large-scale treatment studies of speech, language, learning, voice, swallowing, hearing and balance disorders.

Wellbeing: Mind, body, Relax, Self

Leonard Portner, MD.

Julee’s father and original teacher. Traditionally trained Western medicine physician, studying genetics realized links between how what we eat, live and think impacts our health. Developing his style, learning and collaborating with many other pioneers in complementary, alternative and integrative medicine in the late 70’s and early 80’s, he brought home many tips, tools, techniques beyond traditional approaches. Working with Norman Sheely, MD to establish the Michigan chapter of the American Medical Association, Dr. Portner was able to bring new perspectives in care, empowering people by educating them on the benefits of healthy choices. Together with her parents and sister Julee learned, practiced and began to incorporate powerful tools and techniques into practical everyday life. “Ask The Doctor”, a local and then nationally syndicated radio show starring Dr. Portner, who answered calls, invited guests who were writing the books that we referenced today as the foundational works of integrative care in the US. Julee has been exposed to a lifetime of understandings beyond conventional Western care models. He was a pioneer in our community offering consultative visits, classes, workshops and community health and fitness faires. Gathering people together, educating, helping them understand and making healthier accessible to everyone, these are the skills that Julee works to bring into her style of practice, explaining in a playful ways the various ways we can gain and keep control over our health and wellbeing.

Transcendental Meditation (TM)

Julee began practicing meditation at the age of 9, when she and her family learned TM. This form of meditation and mind + body connection focus demonstrated health benefits in peer reviewed research in the 1970’s. Meditation of all kinds have proven benefits for stress reduction and health promotion, disease and pain management, prevention, deep rest and relaxation response, improved cardiovascular, mental and many other health benefits shown in countless studies. Meditation is medicine. TM was brought the US in the late 1950’s by a physicist, scholar and meditation teacher Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who linked peer reviewed scientific research to show the positive effects of a regular meditation practice. Since 1970’s there have been and continues to increased understanding of the human stress response and resultant impacts on health. Numerous studies continue to show many wide ranging benefits of regular meditation to improve health and wellbeing for every age and stage of illness and disease. Meditation is medicine, it supports the knowledge of the self and the collective relationships of mind, body and spirt. Still these practices are not widely taught, understood or accepted. There are many to choose from, the recommendation is to have an experience. Try one out and see for yourself.
